Safety Engineering and Assurance
This area applies to knowledge of scientific, engineering and management principles for ensuring safety of missions and systems through controlled design, development, operation, and disposal. It includes the ability to use analytical tools such as failure modes and effects analysis, fault tree analysis, probabilistic risk assessment and hazard analysis, and develop technical reports of results, conclusions, and recommendations to support risk-informed decision-making. Safety Engineering and Assurance applies criteria and techniques such as safety audits, assessments, inspections, trend analysis, and sampling to identify and eliminate/mitigate hazards and achieve an acceptable level of risk, within the constraints of operational effectiveness and suitability, time, and cost throughout all phases of the system (mission) life cycle.
