Observing/Optical Systems
This area applies principles and practices related to the research, design, development, test, and evaluation and/or operation of optical components and systems, including optical sensors and optical data/image processing. Inherent within this research focus area is knowledge, capabilities, and practices associated with mechanically and digitally based optical instruments and associated measurement systems required to support siting, construction, assembly or operation of facilities, flight vehicles, payloads, infrastructure, and/or associated ground support equipment and processes. Researchers working in this area must have knowledge of light and optical theory and its application, surveying techniques; measurement.
