Mechanics and Durability

Engineers in this field need knowledge, capability and practices associated with using and modifying advanced analytical and computational methods to assess the capability of structures to withstand applied loads and environmental conditions without failure. The tasks include the development of structural math models for the analysis of complex indeterminate structures, mechanical systems, and propulsion systems to determine structural response to multiple external and internal environmental conditions. Other areas include the performance of fatigue and fracture mechanics analyses to assess structural life. Broad knowledge of associated disciplines including structural dynamics, materials science, structural and mechanical design and damage tolerance are needed.
