Cal Poly Student Works on NASA Robotics Project with NASA Hands-On USRP Internship

California resident Kyle Husmann is an intern this fall at the NASA Ames Research Center with the NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP).  Husmann is working in the Intelligent Robotics department during his 15 week internship in Moffit Field, CA.

Husmann works with a NASA mentor on a project that involves development on Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).  DEMs store topographical data acquired by satellites. His job is to evaluate and verify the accuracy of these models. The data that Husmann and others are producing may be used in the future to plan for the next Lunar or Martian mission.

“I enjoy the academic environment — everybody is enthusiastic about what they are working on and it is fun to hear about and learn from other people’s projects,” comments Husmann about his experience at NASA thus far.

Husmann is a senior at California Polytechnic University from Santa Clara, CA. He expects to graduate with a degree in electrical engineering in June 2010.

“It was easy to choose this academic path because my entire childhood was shaped by my interest in mathematics, computers, and electronics,” adds Husmann.

Nine Electrical and Computer Engineering students are currently working on-site for the Fall 2009 internship session at NASA Centers and Facilities through the Undergraduate Student Research Program internship opportunity.
