NASA USRP Summer Projects Go Green
The Undergraduate Student Research Project has projects around the country that have “Green” focus. Projects from the Ames Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, Langley Research Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, and Wallops Flight Facility all hold USRP Summer projects with an environmental or green technologies focus.
These research projects are great examples of how NASA is contributing to the sustainability of the Earth. Undergraduate student researchers majoring in engineering, science, and mathematics are making significant contributions to the NASA “Green” effort and other critical research projects.
USRP research projects are developed and managed by NASA mentors at every NASA center and research facility. Research initiatives in enhanced fuel cell and lithium battery technologies are one main focus of the NASA green projects.
“As increased energy efficiency, and particularly fuel efficiency, becomes a greater concern, hybrid and electric vehicles gain greater prominence in the market. Electric vehicles (EVs), in particular, provide an attractive option as they produce no emissions during operation, isolating any potential emissions and effluents in the manufacturing and energy-generation streams. NASA has taken a keen interest in battery-powered vehicles, and is encouraging their continued development” – NASA Spinoff 2008 Lithium Battery Power Delivers Electric Vehicles to Market.
